REWIND: Recycle Garment

'REWIND' is our first textile recycling project, turning discarded fabrics into threads and back into a bag.
About 100 billion clothes are made in a year on Earth, where 7 billion people live. Thanks to this, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted annually by the global clothing industry accounts for 10% of the world's total carbon emissions. This is more than the combined amount of carbon emitted by ships and aviation industries around the world. It may not be surprising that the amount of water used to make clothes reaches 1.5 trillion liters a year. What's really surprising is the fact that about 33 billion of them are discarded annually. Clothes that we buy easily, wear easily, and throw away are becoming garbage rivers and garbage mountains somewhere.
100 billion pieces of clothing are made over a year in our world, while with only 7 billion people that live. Total amount of carbon emitted by the industry accounts for 10% of world annual carbon emissions. What really startled me was that 33 billion pieces of garments are thrown away each year, creating mountains of clothes.
PLEATSMAMA yearned to solve such problem. That's how PLEATSMAMA's PLMA-LAB and Hyosung's Smart Lab began the project: 'REWIND: Recycled Garments'. Through numerous attempts and experiments, we finally succeeded melting single-component fabric waste, making threads and producing a brand new fashion item.

The first result of the project is PLEATSMAMA Saddle Bag. Made with polyester entirely from recycled fabric, our signature pleats design adds some edge to the bag. We are planning to develop the campaign, based on all of your experience and feedback.

Yes, limitations do exist. Currently, only garment made of a single component can be recycled into recycled yarn. In that sense, multiple experiments will be conducted in PLMA-LAB™. The journey is to discover recycling procedure for mixed-component garment.

There is no clear answer to ‘sustainability’. It is enough to try the best in your own place. With so many perspectives and approaches on sustainability itself, we PLEATSMAMA is also a sustainable brand on our own perspectives.
We came to the conclusion that 'recycling' is how we can contribute to clothing waste issues. Beginning our journey with REWIND project, we are plannimg to develop more and more; with a small hope that the world can hear our message in the future.
